Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, is confident that Nigerians will soon thank President Bola Tinubu for approving Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House. Agbese made this statement in response to a question from a reporter.
In April of 2023, the party now in power, the All Progressives Congress (APC), publicly nominated Abbas as its candidate for the role of Speaker.
Because to Tinubu’s advice, the party decided to back Abbas for the position, which caused the other candidates to withdraw from the race in advance of the inauguration of the 10th Assembly.
Agbese, while speaking to the media from his office, acknowledged that both the President and the APC had made an informed decision in selecting Abbas.
He stated, “Recommending Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, to be Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives is one of the greatest steps taken in the right direction by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and our great party, the APC.” He added, “This is one of the greatest steps taken in the right direction.”
Agbese continued to praise Abbas for his great leadership qualities and legislative savvy, both of which he had demonstrated. He brought attention to the fact that the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly included the formation of comprehensive policies and programs, which indicated a solid foundation for the House’s activities.
He went on to clarify on Abbas’s dedication to transparency and training by adding, “The Speaker is committed to open NASS, where all and sundry would be abreast with the workings and happenings of the House in what we call citizens engagements.” He is dedicated to delivering high-quality training to a wide range of individuals, including MPs, bureaucrats, and even journalists covering the House.
Agbese lauded the swift adaption of members when asked about the early worries over the functionality of the Assembly due to the predominance of freshman parliamentarians.
He noted their commitment to House norms and the efficient conduct of discussions, both of which reflected a seamless process of legislation.
Agbese congratulated Abbas and Benjamin Kalu on their leadership, praising them for recent successes such as the successful adjustment of the House’s standing rules. Agbese attributed the victory to their direction of the House.
In addition to this, he highlighted the significant changes that have taken place in the relationship between the executive branch and the legislative branch, suggesting a concerted effort for the good of the Nigerian people.
Agbese concluded his remarks with a positive perspective for the future, suggesting that Nigerians would without a doubt acknowledge Tinubu’s contribution in recommending Abbas.
