On wings of memory: A tribute to mummy (MIC Abimbola Okenla- Sowemimo

Three years have passed since that bittersweet sunrise, the one that bathed the world in light but dimmed ours just a touch. Yet, your absence, Mother, is not a void, but rather a radiant echo, reverberating within our hearts and weaving through the tapestry of our lives.

You were a woman woven from the finest threads of love and compassion. Your embrace, a haven of warmth where tears and triumphs found equal solace. Your wisdom, a shimmering beacon that guided us through life’s murky waters. You nurtured us not just with food and shelter, but with an unyielding belief in our dreams, instilling in us the audacity to reach for the stars, just as you had.

Queens College Lagos, its hallowed halls whispered your name, resonating with the echoes of a Head Girl who led with grace and intellect. Across the oceans, at the Herald Tribune Forum in 1961, you mingled with giants, your voice, young yet determined, representing a nation on the cusp of its own bright dawn. Cambridge, that bastion of learning, bowed to your brilliance; the MA Cantab (Econs) adorning your name is a testament to your relentless pursuit of knowledge.

But academia was merely a prelude to the grand opera of your career. The Nigerian Civil Service, a complex labyrinth of power and responsibility, found in you a navigator without peer. You scaled its heights not with ambition’s ruthless claw, but with the steady stride of integrity and service. Your principles, unyielding as granite, refused to bend to the seductive whispers of corruption. You were a champion of justice, a tireless advocate for the voiceless, proving that leadership could be etched in compassion, not just cold steel.

Diligence and commitment were her compass, not the siren song of ambition.

Power, for Mother, wasn’t a weapon wielded, but a platform to serve, a ladder to lift others. In a world where ethical integrity is often a fading echo, she held to her Christian principles with unwavering conviction. Riches she eschewed, knowing true wealth lay in the tapestry of faith, family, and a life led with purpose.

Yet, amidst the whirlwind of power and duty, you remained steadfast in your faith, the Legacy bequeathed to the Okenla Family.

Your Christianity wasn’t a Sunday-morning charade, but a vibrant tapestry woven into the fabric of your being. You served your God with the utmost unwavering dedication , leaving a legacy of Christian mentorship that continues to illuminate our path.

Today, Mother, though tears may blur our vision, remember, we do not grieve as those without hope. We mourn your absence, yes, but we celebrate your life, a symphony of triumph in the face of adversity, a testament to the power of love and integrity.

You continue to live on in every act of kindness we perform, in every dream we dare to chase, in every stand we take for what is right.

So, dear Mother, rest now in the bosom of eternity, secure in the knowledge that your memory is a firebrand, blazing forth to guide us, to inspire us, to remind us that the world is a little dimmer without your light, but that we, your grateful children, will carry your torch with unyielding Joy, knowing that one day, we shall meet again, on that celestial shore where tears are no more, and love reigns eternal.
