Dr. Usha Anenga: A man who defiled all odds to become a medical dictor

By Ukan Kurugh

Often we don’t celebrate our people enough especially young ones who are trying to make an impact. We focus on negative trends that portray Benue in a bad light. Today I’ve chosen to celebrate a young Benue son who is doing Benue and Tiv people proud. His is Dr Usha Anenga

Despite the setback of spending 12 years in Medical school because of accreditation issues of the first set of medical students at Benue State University, Dr Usha has defied all odds to make remarkable progress and achievements.

He completed his residency program in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in record time and became the first graduate of Benue State University to be a medical Specialist. In the course of accomplishing that, he was the overall best candidate and also had the best dissertation in the entire Nigeria for the fellowship examination of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
He also has a fellowship in the same field with the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and also won the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) prize for best scientific paper at the WACS conference in Togo last year.

Dr Usha has also been involved in some medical politics and has risen from the lower rungs of leadership to the top. He was the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Benue State and last week he was elected the Second Vice-President of NMA; the highest position occupied by a Tiv Person in the NMA and also the highest position occupied at the national level from a member of NMA Benue State. All of these under the age of 40!

Besides all of this, Dr Usha is a nice person. Over the years, if you have any issues at BSUTH, all you need to do is to reach out to Dr Usha and you are sorted. Personally, he has come through for me several times.

I just thought we should all celebrate this young chap today. Sometimes this can go a long way to encourage them to progress and do even more. Afterall, if we don’t celebrate our own, who will?
