The Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament, Meimunatu Ibrahima says urgent actions are being taken in collaboration with other Ecowas institutions to implement the Kano Declaration.
Kano Declaration is a resolution taken by members of the ECOWAS Parliament during the inaugural session in May 2024 in Kano State, Nigeria, to urgently address several political, economic, and security crises in the region, which include the proposed withdrawal of three member counties, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger; growing tension between Benin and Niger as well as terrorism, food insecurity, irregular migration, and climate change.
The Speaker made this known at the opening of the First Ordinary Season of the Sixth Legislation of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
She said already, certain measures have already been taken in this direction, which include setting up a committee and field visits.
“Specifically, utilizing this declaration, we have resolved among other things to set up an Ad hoc mediation committee to initiate and maintain not only dialogue with the authorities of these different countries but also communication among our various populations, conduct field visits to understand and help settle disagreements between the friendly and Sister nations, Benin and Niger”.
On the forthcoming Ghana and Guinea Bissau, Hajia Ibrahima appealed to all political players in these countries to be committed to a free, peaceful, and transparent electoral process.
In his goodwill message, the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, represented by his deputy, called on members of the ECOWAS Parliament to be committed to the implementation of resolutions.
“It is important to stress that any resolution reached will amount to nothing if there is no commitment and cooperation on the part of ECOWAS member States”.
The First Ordinary Season of the ECOWAS Parliament will among other things feature the presentation of a report by the President ECOWAS Commission; the consideration of draft community Acts and the presentation of a country report by a national delegation.
