Shining star extinguished: Tribute to Zainab Usman, the calm Kaduna journalist

By Nasir Dambatta

The world of journalism has lost a shining star, a dedicated and passionate storyteller who left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Zainab Usman, a committed journalist with Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria ( FRCN)Kaduna, may have left us too soon, but her legacy will continue to inspire and motivate generations to come.

I had the privilege of sharing a moment with Zainab just a few months ago, on a Friday, when we engaged in a thought-provoking conversation on NNPC’s $2.8m AKK Gas project spearheaded by someone we fondly call ‘Alkanemi Warrior’, aka Malam Mele Kyari. It was an opportunity to boil down the technical jargons for native speakers of Hausa language. Though separated by a glass screen, her calm and composed demeanor shone through, expertly guiding the programme’s flow with her trademark poise.

Zainab’s dedication to her craft was evident in every broadcast, every report, and every conversation. Her passion for storytelling was contagious, and her commitment to truth and accuracy unwavering. She embodied the very essence of journalism, seeking to inform, educate, and empower her audience.

As we mourn the loss of this incredible journalist, we take comfort in the memories of her remarkable work, her kindness, and her generosity of spirit. Zainab may be gone, but her impact on the world of journalism and the lives of those she touched will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, dear Zainab. Your legacy will continue to shine bright, inspiring us to strive for excellence, to seek truth, and to tell the stories that need to be told. Good night.
