In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10th, the Osun State Government wishes to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to the mental health and well-being of all residents.

This year also serves as a powerful reminder that collective efforts can save lives and foster a supportive environment for those struggling with mental health challenges.

Suicide is a grave public health concern that affects individuals, families, and communities across the globe. In Nigeria, the rising prevalence of mental health issues, exacerbated by socio-economic challenges, makes it imperative for all stakeholders to intensify efforts towards prevention.

The Osun State Government, under the visionary leadership of Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, recognizes the critical importance of mental health services and has made significant strides in providing accessible and affordable care to vulnerable populations.

As the Special Adviser on Special Needs to Governor Ademola Adeleke, I am acutely aware of the challenges faced by individuals with mental health conditions.

In response, the state government has initiated and continues to initiate several programmes aimed at reducing the stigma associated with mental illness, providing support for those in crisis, and promoting mental well-being across all sectors of society.

Key initiatives include the expansion of mental health services in primary healthcare centers, training for healthcare professionals in suicide prevention, and community outreach programs designed to raise awareness and educate the public about mental health.

We are also working closely with non-governmental organizations, religious institutions, and traditional leaders to create a network of support for individuals at risk. We are also open to more collaborations.

However, the fight against suicide requires more than just government intervention. It demands a collective effort from every member of society. Friends, family members, colleagues, and neighbors must all play a role in recognizing the signs of distress and providing timely support.

It is crucial that we create an environment where individuals feel safe to express their struggles and seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination.

As we mark World Suicide Prevention Day, let us all commit to being there for one another. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, please reach out to a trusted individual or contact mental health professionals who can provide the necessary support. Remember, your actions can create hope and save lives.

In conclusion, the Osun State Government remains steadfast in its mission to enhance mental health services and ensure that every citizen has access to the care and support they need. Together, we can build a society where mental health is prioritized, and suicide is no longer seen as an option.

Let us create hope through action.
