Mothers urged to join hands in road accident prevention

By Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka, Abuja

A road safety advocacy group, Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative (APRI), has called on mothers to join hands in the efforts to prevent and reduce road crashes on Nigerian roads.

According to Ijeoma Georgeben, APRI’s Head of Human Resources, mothers have been the most affected by road crashes, often losing their breadwinners and loved ones. She urged mothers to rise and join hands in preventing road crashes, emphasizing that Nigeria aims to reduce road crashes by 50% from 2020 to 2030 as part of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety.

Ijeoma expressed disappointment that organized women’s societies, such as the National Council of Women Society (NCWS), have not been actively involved in advocating for road safety. She reminded Nigerian mothers that the recent 2024 World Remembrance Day for Road Crash Victims highlighted the devastating impact of road crashes, yet few women participated in the event.

Ijeoma advised mothers to caution their husbands and children who drive to be road traffic safety conscious, emphasizing that achieving safer roads with zero road crash index requires the involvement of mothers.

APRI’s call to action comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of road safety. By joining hands, mothers can play a crucial role in preventing road crashes and promoting a safer transportation system for all.
