The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, welcomed senators back from the Christmas break with a call to rededicate themselves to the service of Nigeria.
In his welcome speech, Akpabio expressed his gratitude and hope, wishing the senators a prosperous, memorable, and impactful New Year.
As the Senate embarks on the new legislative year, Akpabio urged his colleagues to renew their commitment to fixing Nigeria, transforming it into the country of their dreams, the pride of Africa, and a beacon of hope for the world.
He emphasized the importance of working collaboratively with the executive arm of government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to ensure the progress and prosperity of the nation.
On key legislative tasks ahead, Akpabio highlighted two critical tasks before the Senate: the consideration of the national budget and the completion of electoral reforms.
He stressed that the budget is not just a financial document but a blueprint of the aspirations and hopes of millions of Nigerians.
The Senate must ensure that every item in the budget reflects the collective dreams of the people and serves as a catalyst for development, equity, and justice.
On electoral reforms, Akpabio emphasized that it is a moral imperative to gift the Nigerian people a system that is transparent, credible, and reflective of their will.
He urged his colleagues not to waver in this responsibility, as trust in electoral processes is the foundation of every thriving democracy.
Akpabio concluded his speech by calling on his colleagues to remain steadfast in their prayers for the peace and unity of Nigeria.
He emphasized that the country faces numerous challenges, but collective intercession can make a significant difference.
Akpabio urged the senators to unite in purpose, strive for the common good, and dedicate themselves wholly to the task of nation-building.
As the Senate resumes its legislative duties, Akpabio’s speech sets the tone for a year focused on addressing Nigeria’s challenges and working towards a brighter future for all citizens ¹.
