Prof Ezekiel Babalola, the National President of the National Union of Hawkers says that the trade union plans to transform hawkers through: strong social support systems, formal bureaucratic processes; and licensing and identification for members.
This latest development was contained in a press statement from the National President within the week.
While urging the government at all levels to create a dignified and friendly trading environment for hawkers, and emphasizing the need for government support for the union’s regulatory guidelines, he said the benefits of the support, the union’s efforts will: Improve the lives of hawkers; Prevent child abuse and criminal activity; and Promote societal well-being
Highlighting the importance of hawking as a trade that has empowered individuals, particularly unemployed graduates and families, he noted that by supporting the union’s initiatives, the government can help create a sustainable livelihood option for hawkers.
The NUH’s efforts aim to address the challenges faced by hawkers and promote a dignified and sustainable trading environment.
