Ganduje resigns as APC National Chairman

..cites zoning pressure, health challenges

By Lubem Gena, Abuja

Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially resigned from his position, citing a combination of internal party pressure over zoning and personal health concerns.

News Headquarters notes that in a resignation letter submitted to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party on Friday, the former Kano State governor stated that he was stepping down “in the interest of party unity” and to “prioritize personal wellbeing” following recent health challenges.

A section of the media said he resigned after due consultation and reflection in order to use the opportunity to focus on his health.

Ganduje’s resignation follows sustained agitation from leaders of the APC in the North Central geopolitical zone, who argued that the position of national chairman was originally zoned to their region. The appointment of Ganduje from the North-West after Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s exit in 2023 had been a point of contention.

Party insiders confirmed that following several consultations, Ganduje was advised to vacate the position to allow for a smooth transition ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for December 2025.

In the interim, a senior member of the National Working Committee—most likely one of the national vice chairmen—is expected to assume the role of acting chairman pending the emergence of a substantive replacement.

Ganduje expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC stakeholders, and party faithful across the country for their support during his tenure.

His exit now paves the way for possible re-zoning of key party positions as APC strategizes for the 2027 general elections.
