Constitutional review: Dr. Christabel Okoye advocates for increased women’s representation

In a brief press interview with some National Assemble journalists in National Assembly on Thursday, Dr. Christabel Reagan Okoye, Executive Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Drug Monitoring (NANDRUM) and Coordinator of Excellence Women International (EWI), called for increased representation of women in the National Assembly. She urged the Senate to consider incorporating a provision into the constitution that guarantees one-third of women in the House of Representatives and three female senators in each state. Ekunkonye Junior was there for News Headquarters.

What are your thoughts on the proposed constitutional review, particularly with regards to gender equity?

I believe that women should have a guaranteed representation in the House of Representatives and the Senate. I propose that one-quarter of the House of Representatives should be women, and in each zone, one out of the three senators should be a woman. This would promote gender equality and amplify women’s voices in the country’s decision-making processes.

Why do you think this representation is necessary?

Women are not adequately represented in the National Assembly. Currently, we have only four female senators out of 109, which is laughable and insignificant. Women have a unique perspective and can bring about positive change. They are also less likely to be corrupt and are often more focused on building and developing the country.

Are you satisfied with the current representation of women in appointive positions?

Not at all. The Belgian Declaration, which stipulates 30% representation for women, should be strictly adhered to. Women are capable and competent, and we should be given the opportunity to contribute to the country’s development.

Some people believe that women are enemies to themselves and won’t support other women in elections. How do you respond to this?

I don’t think that’s true. Women are becoming more empowered and supportive of each other. We have organizations like Excellence Women International, which encourages and empowers women. It’s time to move beyond the notion that women are fighting each other.

What are your views on the Bill on Local Government Autonomy?

The local government autonomy should be implemented in line with the verdict of the Supreme Court. It should be included in the constitution and implemented fully to ensure that local governments have the necessary autonomy to function effectively.

What about the Bill for the Establishment of State Police?

State police is long overdue. It would help to curb the reckless killings and insecurity that we’re experiencing in the country. It’s essential that we consider establishing state police to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.

You’ve been at the forefront of the fight against drug abuse. Why the interest?

I’m passionate about fighting drug abuse because it’s breaking down our youths and affecting our society. As an employer of labor, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of drug abuse on individuals and the economy. We need to do more to address this issue and prevent it from getting out of control. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is doing well, but we need all hands on deck to tackle this problem.
