Nigeria’s Senate has taken another significant stride as Legislative Houses (Powers & Privileges) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Senator Shehu Lawan Kaka (Borno Central), with others has passed second reading

These bills scaled first reading at the Senate plenary, in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The bills, which were sponsored by prominent senators, cover a range of vital areas, including technology, legislative powers, cybercrime, constitutional amendments, and healthcare.

The bills that passed first reading along with that of Senator Shehu, Lawan Kaka, and are awaiting second reading are National Office of Technology Acquisition and Promotion Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), and Cybercrimes (Prohibition & Prevention) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Senator Ipalibo Harry Banigo (Rivers West).

Others are Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2015, sponsored by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards, etc) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Senator Abba Patrick Moro (Benue South)

These bills will now undergo further scrutiny and debate before being passed into law. The Senate’s approval of these bills may demonstrate its commitment to addressing key issues affecting Nigeria and its citizens.
