In an exclusive interview with Senate Senior Correspondent Nwamulunamma Ogbunkalese, Prince Nwafor-Orizu, Orji, a prince from Nnewi in Anambra’s ancient dynasty and monarchy, shares his thoughts on the National Council for Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024. The Bill, sponsored by former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, seeks to recognize traditional councils in the Constitution and elevate the Sultan and Ooni as permanent co-chairmen.
This Bill, he hailed the former governor for its sponsorship, but faulted the permanent chairmanship of the council by two traditional rulers from North West and East to the neglect of the South East and others. Excerpts.
What are your thoughts on the Bill’s clause designating the Ooni of Ife and Sultan of Sokoto as permanent co-Chairmen?
Lalong’s intentions may be good, but the procedure is flawed. A law cannot exist with people’s names or offices. This will create an imbalance, ignoring the interests of other regions, particularly the South East and South South.
What is your reason for opposing the Bill?
The Bill ignores the Igbo interest and perpetuates the Hausa-Yoruba dominance in governance. Ndigbo are being treated as if they don’t exist. Appointments are made without representation from the South East.
What difference did Obasanjo make?
Obasanjo recognized Nigeria’s cardinal tribes and zones. He ensured representation from different regions in key positions.
What is special about the Igwe of Nnewi?
The Igwe of Nnewi is a prominent traditional ruler in Igboland, with a 500-year-old monarchy. If traditional rulers are to be recognized, the Igwe of Nnewi should be considered.
What is your recommendation?
The Council should be rotated between Geopolitical Zones, like the NDDC model. This will ensure balance and fairness.
What advice do you have for the Senate?
The Senate should critically examine the Bill and consider the potential consequences. If passed, it may create more confusion.
What advice do you have for the Ooni and Sultan?
They should recognize the interests of other traditional rulers and regions. Ignoring the South East and other zones will create imbalance and discord.
