NCS debunks allegations of illegal fees

By Hyacinth Eku, Abuja

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has denied allegations that prison officers were forced to pay N350,000 for training certificates, describing the claims as baseless and aimed at undermining the Service’s integrity, according to a press statement from Umar Abubakar, Deputy Controller of Corrections Public Relations Office.

The NCoS categorically stated that training and retraining of officers are core components of its professional development mandate, and no fees are charged aside from caution fees of N1,000 and N2,000.

The Service emphasized that the welfare of staff has been upgraded and is a top priority under the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Controller General has warned against any form of extra charges, citing specific circular references.

The NCoS clarified that its cooperative society serves as a fallback welfare system for retired and deceased personnel, while also providing financial support to officers through its Microfinance Bank and hospitality initiatives like COCOS Hotel.

The Service assured that all payments of entitlements to beneficiaries are up-to-date.

The NCoS advises reporters to verify information through official channels, specifically the Complaint Response Desk email, before publishing.

The Service urges the public and media to rely on verified information and avoid spreading misinformation.

The NCoS remains committed to transparency and accountability in its operations.
