Eze Ndigbo urges legislators to back New Yam Festival, promote Igbo culture

By Hyacinth Eku, Abuja

The Paramount Ruler of the Igbo people in Angwadodo Community, HRH Chidi Nwogwugwu, has called on the legislative and executive arms of government to promote and encourage cultures like the New Yam Festival.

Speaking in an interview during the 2025 New Yam Festival organized by Ohaneze Ndigbo in Angwadodo Community Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), his domain, Eze Ndigbo emphasized the need for laws to back the preservation and promotion of rich cultural traditions.

“We use this festival to rekindle our rich cultures and traditions that are not repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience,” he stated.

He lamented that many in the township have lost touch with vital customs, such as breaking cola nuts, and stressed the importance of festivals like the New Yam Festival in reviving these practices.

Eze Ndigbo’s charge is a clarion call to senators, governors, and other government officials to support and promote cultural events that showcase the heritage of the Igbo people.

By backing such initiatives with legislation, the government can help ensure the preservation of cultural traditions for future generations.
