The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) FCT Command has treated with a wave of hand, the allegations that female inmates across the country are being denied menstrual care, describing the claim as “false and misleading”.
In a statement from DSC Adamu Samson Duza, Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command over the weekend, the NCoS said it supplies sanitary pads and hygiene kits to all female inmates at no cost, with monthly distribution recorded in inmates’ welfare registers.
The Service also has designated healthcare units with qualified medical personnel to attend to the medical needs of female inmates, including menstrual-related issues.
The NCoS attributed the claim to a lack of verification, urging reporters to confirm sources of information before publication.
The Service remains committed to upholding the dignity and humane treatment of all inmates, in line with international best practices and Nigerian law.
The denial comes after allegations emerged that female inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre Suleja were being neglected.
The NCoS said it collaborates with development partners and organizations to provide menstrual hygiene awareness and products, citing a recent donation of sanitary pads from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as an example.
