…Calls for independent investigation into the incidentÂ
The Eastern Union (EU), a non-partisan civic pressure group committed to democratic accountability and national stability, has strongly condemned the reported attack on African Democratic Congress (ADC) faithfuls in Benin City, Edo State.
Recall that Peter Obi, former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, and other political stakeholders associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were attacked by unknown gunmen, during their recent political engagement in Benin City.
The group reacted to the incidence, in Abuja, through a statement signed by Iyke Newman Esq. National Director, Media & Publicity, Eastern Union, Nigeria, titled ‘Re: Unwarranted And Unprovoked Attack On Opposition Leaders In Edo State.’
The statement reads; the disruption of a lawful political gathering and the endangerment of lives represent a dangerous signal for Nigeria’s democratic space.
“Violence or intimidation directed at any political actor, regardless of affiliation, undermines constitutional freedoms and weakens public confidence in democratic institutions.
“Eastern Union emphasizes that democracy thrives on tolerance, lawful engagement, and the protection of dissenting voices.
“Political competition must remain an exchange of ideas, not a contest of force.
“We therefore call for the following actions to be taken: a swift, transparent, and independent investigation into the incident.
“The identification and prosecution of all individuals found culpable.
“Clear security guarantees for all political actors and citizens engaging in peaceful political activities and
“Responsible public communication from all stakeholders to prevent escalation.
In conclusion, the group further advocated that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected above partisan interests.
