NBA Chairman warns APC of ADC challenge in 2027 elections

By Ekunkonye Junior, Abuja

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Nyanya-Karu branch in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr Alex Edim, has sounded a note of caution to the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the mass decamping of governors to the party.

In an interview, Edim emphasized that the governors, mostly in their second term, are seeking security and protection from potential prosecution, rather than genuine loyalty to the APC.

Edim, a seasoned lawyer, political analyst and politician, noted that the governors’ grassroots relevance is limited compared to national assembly members who are seeking re-election. He warned that the APC should not take the decamping governors for granted, as their influence may not translate to electoral success.

According to him, the National Assembly members who have moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are direct representatives of the people, with a stronger connection to their constituents. Their decamping to the ADC is a significant boost to the party, which is likely to give the APC a good fight at the polls.

The NBA chairman emphasized that the ADC’s gains could make the 2027 election a closely contested one. He urged Nigerians to carefully consider their options and make informed decisions at the polls.

Edim’s warning comes as politicians continue to switch parties, raising questions about the implications for the 2027 general election. The APC’s decision to absorb the decamping governors has been seen as a strategic move, but Edim’s analysis suggests it may not yield the expected results.

The ADC, on the other hand, is likely to capitalize on its newfound strength and challenge the APC. Edim’s assessment is a wake-up call for the APC to strengthen its grassroots support and not rely solely on the influence of the decamping governors.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the parties respond to the changing dynamics. The stage is set for an intriguing election, with the APC and ADC emerging as major contenders.

Edim’s analysis underscores the importance of understanding the motivations behind the politicians’ party switches. As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election, the stakes are high, and the outcome is far from certain.
