The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu.
The government said the senior retired military officer died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during captivity.
It stated that despite sustained and coordinated rescue efforts involving security agencies, attempts to secure his release ended in tragedy.
The commissioner described the development as a painful loss to both Katsina State and the nation at large.
He said, “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity.”
According to the statement, the incident underscores the human cost of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, particularly in the North-West region.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the late military officer.
He said the tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger and more coordinated action against banditry and violent crime.
The governor assured that the state would intensify collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies to confront criminal groups operating in the region.
He further pledged that those responsible for the abduction and death would be tracked down and brought to justice.
The government also urged citizens to remain calm and continue to support ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace.
It called for prayers for the bereaved family and the repose of the soul of the late Major General.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the vulnerability of high-profile and ordinary citizens amid persistent insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria.
