Benue gov’t bans open grazing, strip clubs, others

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has signed an executive order banning open grazing, open defecation and urination, loitering, and driving against the normal flow of traffic, abandonment or parking of vehicles on traffic lanes or drive-ways, over speeding and overloading of vehicles, and others offences in the state.

Effective February 28, 2024, the executive order restricts late-night gatherings without prior authorisation, mandates closure of businesses by midnight, and prohibits minors from engaging in errands or street vending during school hours or beyond 6:00 PM.

The order also targets behaviours that contravene public morality and decency, including strip clubs, prostitution, indecent dressing, and disrespect for authority.

It establishes penalties for offenders, including fines ranging from N20,000.00 to N500,000.00, confiscation of property, and custodial sentences.

To ensure compliance, Governor Alia has instituted a task force, tribunals, and committees, with jurisdiction granted to magistrates, area court judges, and public order tribunals.

Furthermore, advisory committees at the state and local government levels will provide guidance on policies and programmes related to public order.

The executive order underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, with measures in place to enforce regulations and promote public safety throughout Benue State.
