International Widows Day: Widow Aid Foundation celebrates day, makes case for widows in need

….offers financial business, food aid, health support to widows

In realisation of difficulties faced by widows in Nigeria, a foundation, Widow Aid Foundation (WAF) http://www.widowaid.org has joined the global community to celebrate the day and outlined measures that would cushion the effects of widowhood.

News Headquarters gathered that while speaking at an empowerment event held in Owerri, Imo state, the Founder of WAF, Amb. Iroh Faithful who outlined his initiatives and also encouraged well meaning individuals to always support widows directly or through reputable charity organizations.

“Additionally, the Widow Aid Foundation is proud to announce the groundbreaking of our “Shelter for Widows” project, where we are currently building a new home for a widow in need. This initiative aims to provide safe, secure housing and a foundation for widows to rebuild their lives with dignity.

“As we commemorate International Widows’ Day 2024, the Widow Aid Foundation remains steadfast in the commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by widows.

“Through our programs, advocacy, and partnerships, we strive to create a more just and equitable world where widows are empowered, their rights are protected, and their resilience is celebrated”, he stated.

 

The Widows’ Day is celebrated on June 23rd, as a global observance established by the United Nations in 2010 to raise awareness about the challenges faced by widows worldwide and advocate for their rights and social inclusion.

While acknowledging that the WAF is proud to commemorate this important day by highlighting its ongoing efforts to empower and support widows in its community, Amb. Iroh noted that this year’s theme, “Accelerating the achievements of Gender Equality,” resonates deeply with the WAF’s mission.

“We recognize that widows often face a devastating loss compounded by a long-term struggle for their basic rights and dignity. Worldwide, an estimated 258 million widows live in poverty, denied access to inheritance, credit, and economic resources.

It could be emphasised that, the Widow Aid Foundation has organized a two-day program to support and empower widows on Saturday, June 22nd, during which it provided funding and resources to help a widow, Mrs. Odear Peace, revive her poultry business, as well as several other widows facing financial hardship due to the loss of their spouses.
