A constitutional lawyer and principal partner, Friends Chambers in Abuja and Anambra state, Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu has told those who have been calling for the resignation of Senate President Goodwill Akpabio to find something reasonable to do, instead of distracting senate president in discharge of his lawful and selfless service to the country.
The Nnewi – born prince addressed journalists in the ancient palace in Nnewi, Anambra State, over the weekend.
Sending his message across, the prince described the calls for the senate president’s resignation as unnecessary, saying that Akpabio is only a presiding officer of the senate, not the senate itself, adding that he only announces the senate’s decision.
Informing them that there are senators from other opposition parties in the senate, Barr Orji Nwafor-Orizu therefore reminded them that a lot of interests for that seat was expressed by some senators who lost to Akpabio, just as he stated that the senate president shouldn’t be held responsible personally for the senators’ decision.
The prince therefore noted that the personalization of life style (real or imaginary) of the senate president is irrelevant to the conduct of his office.
Still speaking against the calls for Akpanio’s resignation, Orji Nwafor-Orizu said: “It should be noted that a legislative house that agrees with everything by the executive makes a supplusage and a waste of public fund. In the other hand, a legislative house that opposes everything from the executive leads to anarchy and standstill of government’s operation.”
He continued: Therefore, the Senate and indeed, the National Assembly is functioning between these two opposite schools of thought. It is true that the senate has in the past rejected proposals from the government. If I am wrong, was it not the senate that refused el’Rufai being a minister? Therefore, other situations where the senate disagrees with the executive and other situations where they agree with the executive.”
