SP Okafor, the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Provost Affairs in the Anambra State Police Command, held a meeting with his colleague, SP Tochukwu Anthony Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command. During the meeting, SP Okafor emphasized the need to uphold the principles of the current Commissioner of Police (CP) Itam Obono, who is widely known for his unwavering stance against any form of misconduct by police officers under his command and beyond.
CP Itam Obono, a respected and distinguished officer, is recognized for his integrity, adherence to ethical standards, and fear of God. SP Okafor, in alignment with these values, instructed the PPRO to communicate to all officers within the Anambra State Police Command that he, as the OC Provost, will not tolerate any misconduct or negative reports supported by credible evidence against any officer.
In his directive, SP Okafor outlined key principles that officers are expected to adhere to, as well as examples of misconduct that must be avoided. These include:
Respect for Human Rights: Officers must uphold the rights of citizens in all their interactions, ensuring that detentions, searches, and arrests are conducted lawfully.
Professional Conduct: Officers are to maintain a high level of professionalism, including proper handling of duties, ethical behavior, and avoiding corruption or bribery.
Adherence to Ethical Standards: Misuse of authority, extortion, or involvement in criminal activities will not be condoned.
Accountability: Officers must be prepared to face disciplinary action if they are found to engage in misconduct, as transparency and accountability are critical components of effective policing.
SP Okafor further directed that all OC Provosts in various area commands and divisions within Anambra State should follow the principles set by CP Itam Obono. He encouraged them to ensure that any genuine complaints are addressed promptly and properly, with reports of such matters forwarded to him for record-keeping and further action. This aligns with CP Itam Obono’s policy of keeping his office open to address any misconduct and ensure the public’s confidence in the police force is maintained.
This meeting between SP Okafor and SP Ikenga was prompted by a visit from Mr. Francis, also known as “Follow Me Talk,” a human rights activist. Mr. Francis commended the professionalism of the Anambra State Police Command, particularly noting the neat appearance of the officers, despite having to purchase their uniforms out of pocket. He further acknowledged that the officers in Anambra are among the best-dressed in the country, surpassing even those in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other states.
SP Okafor made it clear that his office will work tirelessly to uphold the integrity and professionalism of the Anambra State Police Command, in line with the vision and principles of CP Itam Obono.
