The Senate has taken a significant step towards promoting technical and technological education in Nigeria, with the introduction of a bill seeking to establish the Federal College of Skills Acquisition and Technology, Agulu, Anambra State.

Sponsored by Senator Victor Chukwunonyelu Umeh (Anambra Central), the bill which passed second reading Wednesday, aims to provide a platform for the acquisition of technical and technological skills, which are essential for the advancement and development of any nation.

According to Senator Umeh, the establishment of the college is a source of youth empowerment, which can help curb unemployment in the country. “Acquisition of technical and technological skills is a major requirement for the advancement and development of any nation,” he said.

The bill, which was read for the first time in the Senate on July 24, 2024, seeks to provide a legal framework for the establishment of the college, which will offer training programs in various technical and technological fields.

If passed, the bill will contribute to the development of Nigeria’s human capital, particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It will also provide opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire the skills needed to compete in the global economy.
