The reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery has been hailed as a significant achievement for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to Barr Amobi Nzelu, while addressing journalists over the weekend, the refinery’s reactivation is a welcome development that could potentially reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) for the benefit of ordinary Nigerians.
Nzelu praised President Tinubu’s administration for achieving what previous administrations could not, stating that: “Throughout Buhari’s regime, we were being told that it would soon start functioning, but within Tinubu’s two years in office, it has started functioning.”
The Port Harcourt Refinery, which has a combined capacity of 210,000 barrels per day, is expected to enhance Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels. The refinery’s reactivation is also expected to create thousands of jobs across the supply chain, from transportation to distribution.
However, Nzelu emphasized that the reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery is just the beginning, stressing that other refineries in the country need to be reactivated as well. He attributed the country’s problems to a “cabal” that has held the country hostage, preventing progress and development.
Nzelu also lamented the huge profits made by individuals who import millions of liters of PMS, stating that “somebody imports millions of litres of PMS and profits are very humongous and a lot of things are being done.”
The reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery is a significant step towards achieving Nigeria’s goal of energy self-sufficiency. As the country moves forward, it is essential to address the challenges posed by the “cabal” and ensure that the interests of ordinary Nigerians are protected.
