Ex-Senate President’s son proposes renaming Enugu stadium after Christian

Orji Nwafor-Orizu Esq, Principal Partner at Friends Chambers and son of former Senate President Sen Akweke Nwafor-Orizu, has proposed renaming the Enugu Stadium after football legend Christian Chukwu.

With the belief that this would be a befitting tribute to Chukwu’s remarkable contributions to Nigerian football, Nwafor – Orizu, a former Vice Chairman, Rangers International Football Club Management Committee and a member, Anambra State Football Club Association, who worked closely with Chukwu addressed journalists on Thursday.

Football Legend Christian Chukwu was reported dead on April 12th 2025 at the age of 74.

On late Christian Chukwu’s achievements, the Nnewi in Anambra – born prince says that until his death, Christian Chukwu is a celebrated figure in Nigerian football, known for his exceptional leadership skills and impressive playing career.

According to him, he captained the Green Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, and led Enugu Rangers to multiple Nigerian Federation Cup titles. Chukwu, he went on also made history as the captain of the Nigerian team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), adding that his achievements extend beyond his playing career, as he went on to become a successful coach, leading teams to various tournaments, including the World Cup.

Justifying his suggestion, Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu cited examples of stadiums named after football legends in other states, including: Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba; Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt; Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos and; Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri

He believes that renaming the Enugu Stadium after Christian Chukwu would be a fitting tribute to the football icon’s achievements and contributions to Nigerian football.

Nwafor-Orizu’s connection to Chukwu stems from their work together, with Chukwu serving as Vice Chairman of the Rangers International Football Club Management Committee.

The significance of this proposal is that it aims to immortalize Chukwu’s legacy and recognize his impact on Nigerian football. By honoring him in this way, the state can preserve the memory of one of its most celebrated sports figures and inspire future generations of football enthusiasts.

Chukwu’s biography, unveiled in a ceremony in Lagos, showcases his journey from his early days in football to leading Nigeria to AFCON glory.
