….Partners with Rev. Father Moses Orshio Adamu University towards academic development
In a major boost towards educational advancement in Nigeria, Opay Digital Services has launched a decade-long scholarship programme aimed at addressing financial barriers faced by indigent students.
The initiative, which targets students with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50, will benefit twenty students annually across twenty tertiary institutions (Universities and Polytechnics) in the country.
Unveiling the initiative during a courtesy visit to Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, on Thursday, 15th May, 2025, the Vice President of Opay, Dr. Maxwell Loko, emphasized that the scholarship is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) to give back to society and empower the next generation of leaders.
According to Dr. Loko, the scholarship scheme began with the University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), with Moses Orshio Adasu University emerging as the first state-owned university to benefit.
He added that the initiative goes beyond scholarships, as Opay intends to establish long-term collaborations with partner institutions to promote academic excellence and innovation.
“We are not just offering scholarships. We are here to build bridges that will foster knowledge, innovation, and societal progress,” Dr. Loko stated.
Receiving the Opay delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tor Joe Iorapuu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Mike Odugbo Odey, described the visit as historic and deeply appreciated the company’s gesture.
“It is with great joy and a deep sense of appreciation that I welcome you all to Benue State University on this special occasion.
Today’s event marks a turning point for many of our students who face significant financial hurdles. Your intervention will not only support their academic journey but also position them to contribute meaningfully to our society and the global digital economy,” Professor Odey remarked.
He further outlined several strategic areas where the University is seeking Opay’s collaboration for greater impact: donation of four branded Opay commuter buses to facilitate transportation for students and staff across campuses, initiate academic exchange programmes between the University and Chinese universities, establishment of a Centre for Chinese Studies and organizing AI workshops for staff and students.
“Opay’s presence here today is far more than ceremonial as it signals a purposeful collaboration rooted in vision, goodwill and shared values,” Professor Odey concluded.
“We look forward to a vibrant and enduring partnership that will transform lives and strengthen our institution.”
