Nigeria marks 26 years of democracy with public holiday declaration

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate the country’s Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the significance of June 12, saying it represents Nigeria’s journey towards a nation built on truth, justice, and peace. He praised Nigerians’ resilience, strength, and courage, noting that the past 26 years have renewed hope for a brighter future.

 

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democracy’s universal values, emphasizing the importance of the people’s will in shaping Nigeria’s systems.

He assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains dedicated to upholding democracy.
