Human Rights Advocates submits strong petition to IGP, PSC Chairman calling for CSP Ifeanyi Iburu’s reinstatement and national recognition

In a bold and symbolic move today, Mr. Francis a.k.a. “Follow Me Talk” of City Radio 89.7FM Onitsha and Mr. Samuel Ifeanyi Nzeh of Love FM 104.5 Abuja — both founding members of the Follow Me Talk Human Rights and Anti-Intimidation Initiative — have officially submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The petition is also copied to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), urging the immediate reinstatement and commendation of CSP Ifeanyi Iburu.

The call follows the heroic rearrest of one of the fugitive suspects, Ikemefuna Ossai, involved in the brutal kidnap and murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly. Despite being removed from his post as RRS Commander, CSP Iburu personally pursued and apprehended the fugitive across state borders — at personal cost and risk — demonstrating unmatched loyalty and professionalism.

The human rights leaders emphasized in their appeal that rewarding CSP Iburu would serve as a morale boost for the entire Nigeria Police Force, and send a powerful message that patriotism and dedication are still honored in the country.

The petition outlines ten (10) compelling reasons why reinstating or promoting CSP Iburu is both necessary and just, citing his unwavering service, national security relevance, and growing public support.

According to Mr. Francis and Mr. Nzeh, “This is not an attack on internal police decisions, but a patriotic civic call to uplift integrity and courage in service to Nigeria.”

The public and fellow civil society organizations are eagerly watching for the IGP and PSC’s response, which may define future expectations of accountability, justice, and recognition in Nigeria’s law enforcement space.

Dear Sir,

RE: URGENT CALL FOR THE REINSTATEMENT OF CSP IFEANYI IBURU IN THE LIGHT OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE AND NATIONAL SECURITY INTEREST

Fraternal greetings from the Follow Me Talk Human Rights and Anti-Intimidation Initiative.

On behalf of our organization — a legally recognized civil rights group advocating for justice, integrity, and professionalism within Nigeria’s security landscape — we respectfully submit this petition in public interest regarding the recent removal of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ifeanyi Iburu from his post as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, Anambra State.

Background

Despite his removal, CSP Iburu demonstrated outstanding personal commitment by independently pursuing and successfully rearresting fugitive suspect Ikemefuna Ossai — one of the escapees accused in the kidnap and murder of Hon. Justice Azuka. This action, reportedly carried out with personal resources and without formal support, is the kind of patriotism that embodies the mission of the Nigerian Police Force.

Ten (10) Reasons for Reinstatement or Promotion

1. Professionalism Beyond Duty – Continued active investigation post-removal.

2. Rearrest of High-Profile Suspect – Operational success in a critical case.

3. Boost to Public Trust – Signaling accountability and competence.

4. National Security Impact – Helps in containing organized crime in the Southeast.

5. Continuity of Investigations – Prevents disruption in ongoing intelligence.

6. Merit-Based Motivation – Encourages high performance across the Force.

7. Internal Discipline Reinforcement – Rewards integrity over sabotage.

8. Peace in Volatile Regions – His actions have stabilized sensitive regions.

9. Public Backing – Civil society and community support is strong.

10. Educational Example – Should be documented as a training model for recruits.

Our Appeal

We respectfully request:

Reinstatement of CSP Iburu to his former or higher tactical command.

Recognition or Commendation from NPF or PSC for his extraordinary service.

Inclusion of his conduct as a teaching case study in police academies.

A public commendation to inspire both civilians and officers.

This is not to meddle in police operations, but to amplify integrity, dedication, and hope in a system where they are too often overlooked. Let CSP Ifeanyi Iburu be an example that Nigeria still honors its heroes.

We appreciate your fair consideration and look forward to the reaffirmation of justice through institutional support.

Yours faithfully,
