By Abbai -Eku Onyeka, Abuja

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to stronger collaboration with the National Assembly in advancing reforms in the Nigerian correctional system.

This commitment was underscored during a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Hon. Chinedu N. Ogah, and other committee members.

This was contained in a press statement from Dr Ozoya Imohimi, the Public Relations Officer, Federal Ministry of Interior on

Dr. Tunji-Ojo proudly reported progress in reform efforts, highlighting a significant drop in inmate numbers from over 86,000 to approximately 81,450.

This reduction is attributed to a deliberate review process that identified and addressed cases of prolonged incarceration for minor, bailable offenses.

The Minister expressed his deep passion for the Nigerian Correctional Service, describing it as the agency closest to his heart due to its focus on humanity and justice.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing institutional strength and ensuring that even the most vulnerable citizens are not left behind.

“Our government is working hard to enhance the strength of our institutions and ensure that even the most forgotten citizens are not left behind. The strength of our government is not measured by how we treat the powerful, but by how we uplift the weakest in society,” he stated.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo expressed his deep appreciation to the visiting legislators, acknowledging the unwavering support received during past initiatives. He praised the harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislature, describing it as a model of interdependence rather than rivalry.

The Minister reiterated his open-door policy and readiness to work closely with the National Assembly for a better, more inclusive interior sector. This commitment underscores the Ministry’s dedication to advancing reforms and promoting good governance in Nigeria.
