The Senate moves to take action against the rising insecurity in Kwara South senatorial district.
This latest development was as a result of a motion moved by Senator Lola Ashiru, at plenary over the week. To that, the Senate has summoned key security officials, including; Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Olufemi Oluyede; Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
The summons is in response to the recent attacks and killings in the area, particularly in Ifelodun local government area, where 12 vigilantes and the Baale of Ogba-Ayo community were killed.
The Senate has also passed several resolutions to address the insecurity in Kwara South, among which are; calling for the establishing a permanent military base in Ifelodun local government area to serve as a rapid response hub against bandits; that the Senate’s Committees on Defence, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence have been mandated to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas and report back within two weeks and; directing relevant security agencies to identify and prosecute local collaborators aiding criminal groups operating in the district.
The Senate’s actions are aimed at restoring peace and security to the affected areas and ensuring the safety of citizens. Several senators have voiced their support for the motion, emphasizing the need for coordinated federal intervention to address the crisis
