The Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Denis Ter Iyaghigba, has applauded Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium, describing it as “a historic milestone achieved through diligence, strategic diplomacy, and sustained national advocacy.”

In a statement released on Monday, the Commissioner expressed deep satisfaction with the outcome, noting that Nigeria’s successful comeback to the IMO Council after 14 years is “a strong testament to the nation’s renewed visibility and influence in global maritime affairs.”

He explained that the victory reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s maritime administration, technical capability, and global engagement drive. Hon. Iyaghigba commended the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, for leading what he described as “a well-coordinated and year-long diplomatic effort that involved targeted engagements, purposeful advocacy, and extensive consultations across maritime blocs.”

According to him, the Minister’s determination and strategic diplomacy have resulted in “one of the most remarkable achievements in Nigeria’s maritime sector in recent times,” underscoring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning the nation as an influential maritime player.

He noted that President Tinubu’s administration has consistently championed policies that promote diversification, global cooperation, and competitiveness in the maritime industry—policies whose benefits will reverberate across the country, including in Benue State.

Hon. Iyaghigba affirmed that under the leadership of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Benue State is “steadily working to carve out a lasting and impactful presence within the marine and blue economy landscape.” He added that the state’s ongoing initiatives align with the national maritime vision, positioning Benue as “a forward-looking model for subnational participation in the blue economy.”

He further stated that Nigeria’s reinstatement into the IMO Council will pave the way for increased investment, improved maritime safety, enhanced environmental protection, and broader economic opportunities for states and communities across the federation.
