The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have joined forces to revive dedicated tourism information desks at major airports across the country.
This strategic move aims to unlock Nigeria’s vast tourism potential and provide a more welcoming experience for international visitors.
During a visit to FAAN headquarters in Lagos, NTDA Director-General Dr. Olayiwola Awakan emphasized the importance of airports as the first point of contact for tourists.
He described Nigeria as “sitting on a gold mine” of tourism opportunities, highlighting the country’s rich cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and eco-tourism destinations.
Dr. Awakan appealed for the return of tourism information desks at airports, which would provide arriving passengers with immediate access to guides, maps, and local travel options. FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku welcomed the renewed partnership, acknowledging the natural connection between aviation and tourism.
The two leaders established a joint committee to coordinate data sharing and oversee collaborative initiatives between NTDA and FAAN. This partnership is expected to enhance passenger experience, upgrade airport infrastructure, and drive growth in domestic and international tourism arrivals.
The renewed focus on airport-based tourism support aims to create a more welcoming first impression for visitors and showcase Nigeria’s rich diversity. With Nigeria’s tourism sector on the rise, initiatives like this are crucial in unlocking the country’s full potential ¹ ².
The tourism information desks will provide vital services to incoming passengers, offering access to essential materials like maps, guides, and local travel options. This will not only improve the visitor experience but also contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.
