How Gov. Alia has re-engineered the return of peace in Benue

By Donald Kumun

In the tapestry of Nigeria’s complex political landscape, the thread of security and peace often unravels, leaving communities in despair. However, recent developments in Benue State, paint a different picture, one woven with renewed hope and the promise of stability.

This shift which is a palpable sigh of relief among its citizens, can be traced back to a pivotal moment: a phone call from the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, to the President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Amhed Tinubu, which subsequently prompted a significant visit by the President to the beleaguered State. The visit of the President to the State, has produced a profound impact and proactive actions, to tackle the insecurity challenges in the State.

The narrative of Benue was for too long, been dominated by reports of incessant attacks, displacement, and the tragic loss of lives. Farmers feared their fields, and communities lived under the constant shadow of violence. It was against this grim backdrop that Governor Alia, a man deeply committed to the well-being of his people, made a crucial decision: to directly appeal to the highest office in the land for swift intervention. His phone call to the President, was not merely a courtesy; it was a vibrant plea, a strategic move to bring the dire situation of the people of Yelewata in particular, and that of the entire state, to the immediate attention of the President.

The contents of that conversation, undoubtedly conveyed the gravity of the crisis. Governor Alia, fresh from his inauguration and acutely aware of the sufferings of his people, articulated the urgent need for federal intervention to halt the cycle of violence. He highlighted the economic devastation, the humanitarian crisis, and the psychological toll on the people of the State. It was a call that underscored the critical role of federal support in resolving a protracted genocidal attacks that had defied local solutions.

The President’s response was swift and decisive. The phone call, rather than being a mere formality, served as a direct prompt for the President to visit Benue State. This was a significant departure from past approaches, and signaled a personal commitment from the nation’s leader. For the people of Benue, this immediate attention from Aso Rock was a powerful symbol of hope, a tangible sign that their plight was finally being heard at the highest echelons of power.

President Tinubu’s visit to Benue State was more than a symbolic gesture; it was a strong affirmation of his administration’s commitment to national security and the well-being of all Nigerians.

It could be vividly recalled that, during his time in the state, the President met with key stakeholders, including community leaders, security operatives, and internally displaced persons, including those who were hospitalised. His message was clear and unequivocal: his government would spare no effort in supporting genuine initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace to Benue State.

These assurances were not just platitudes. President Tinubu emphasized the strategic importance of Benue State, popularly referred to as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” and reiterated that the continued insecurity posed a significant threat not only to the state’s economy, but also to national food security. He pledged to deploy necessary resources, both human and material, to bolster security operations, enhance intelligence gathering, and facilitate dialogue among feuding parties. In addition, he charged responsible organisations to swing into action and bring the perpetrators of those heinous crimes to book.

The President’s visit instilled a renewed sense of purpose among security forces and gave hope to communities that had long felt abandoned. It marked a turning point which will serve as a harbinger of a coordinated federal response.

Perhaps the most compelling evidence of the positive impact of these interventions is the observable shift on the ground. Since President Tinubu’s visit and the heightened federal support beamed on the affected communities in the State, there has been a palpable sigh of relief across the State. Remarkably, and for the first time in a long while, no community has suffered further attacks, from these killers. This cessation of hostilities is not merely a statistical anomaly; it is a profound demonstration of the effectiveness of the renewed vigour on peace and security.

This newfound tranquility is a direct result of several factors: increased military presence, enhanced intelligence sharing, and a robust approach to security operations. The assurances from the President have translated into actionable strategies, leading to a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of attacks in the State.

While federal support has been instrumental in achieving this current calm, the sustainability of peace in Benue State, ultimately rests on the shoulders of its leadership. In this regard, Governor Alia has demonstrated a patriotic zeal to ensuring the longevity of this new wave of peace. He is, by all indications, well favorably disposed to ensuring the sustainability of the new wave of peace.

Furthermore, Governor Alia is keenly aware of the socio-economic dimensions of peace. His government is focusing on revitalizing the agricultural sector, creating employment opportunities for the youth, and investing in critical infrastructure to improve livelihoods.

The Governor’s proactive approach, coupled with his genuine empathy for the victims of violence, and safety of all Benue citizens, has earned him the trust and confidence of the people. He is not merely reacting to events, but actively shaping a future where peace is not an aspiration but an agenda that guarantees mutual prosperity. This eventually, will yield a permanent solution to the incessant killings in the State, for over 15 years now.

The journey to lasting peace is often arduous and fraught with challenges. However, the recent developments in the State, offer a compelling case study of how decisive leadership, coupled with genuine federal support, can transform a crisis into an opportunity for renewal, and emancipation of the peoples’ constitutional rights.

The path ahead requires continued vigilance, collaboration, and a shared vision, but for the first time in a long while, the people of Benue State, can look towards the future with a tangible sense of hope, and a permanent solution in the long run.
