G4S Academy, renowned for its innovative approach to security and risk management, has forecasted potential unrest in 13 locations across Nigeria amidst the ongoing nationwide protests. This prediction comes as the second day of demonstrations continues against rising hunger and the high cost of living in the country.
In their analysis of the initial day of protests, G4S highlighted the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Umuahia, Yola, Bauchi, and Owerri as areas likely to experience significant violence. The report also identified Dutse, Kaduna, Katsina, Lafia, Minna, Sokoto, and Gusau as regions with a high probability of unrest.
In contrast, G4S anticipates minimal violence in cities such as Kano, Jos, Plateau, Damaturu, Ikeja, Ilorin, Uyo, and Yenagoa.
The protests have been driven by Nigeria’s severe economic challenges, including a soaring inflation rate exceeding 34 percent and food prices that have surged by over 100 percent in the past year. As demonstrators voice their grievances, G4S noted several incidents of violence:
In Minna, gunshots were reported as police intervened to prevent protesters from blocking the Top Medical Junction in the Tunga area.
Police also dispersed youths attempting to breach a store along Zoo Road.
In Kano, protesters set fire to the gatehouse of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), further intensifying the demonstrations.
In response to the escalating unrest, the Nigerian Army and Police Officers have been deployed to various parts of Abuja to maintain order and prevent further disruptions. The protests have prompted local authorities to enforce measures such as a curfew in Karu LG, which restricts movement from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
As the situation unfolds, G4S continues to monitor developments and provide updates on potential flashpoints and emerging risks.
