FG committed to implementing human rights treaties- Justice Jedy-Egba

The Federal Government says it is committed to implementing human rights treaties and conventions entered into that guarantee basic human rights for citizens, adherence to the rule of law, and access to justice.

The Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Beatrice Jedy-Agba, stated this at the 2023 commemoration of the 75th International Human Rights Day held in Abuja.

Justice Jedy-Agba, who is also the Chairperson of the Committee against Torture in Nigeria, encouraged stakeholders and law enforcement agencies to take measures to combat torture in all their detention centers and to ensure respect for human rights.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Anthony Ojukwu, advised all stakeholders to be committed to upholding the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

“We acknowledge the challenges within our legal system and commit to ongoing reforms that strengthen the judiciary, enhance access to justice, and combat corruption.” He said.

Ojukwu said the event with the theme ‘Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All’ underscores the fundamental values of dignity, freedom, and justice that form the cornerstone of human rights.
