The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has taken a significant step towards ensuring fire safety in public and private buildings nationwide.

On Tuesday, the Controller General of the FFS, Olumode Adeyemi Samuel, inaugurated the Special Task Force on Public and Private Building Audit at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.

The task force is mandated to map public buildings, inspect facilities for compliance with fire safety regulations, and provide recommendations to guide enforcement actions and policy decisions.

According to a press release from
DCF P.O. Abraham, National PRO/Head, Corporate Services , FFS, Headquarters, Abuja on Tuesday, the inauguration of the task force underscores the FFS’s renewed commitment to proactive fire risk management and prevention of avoidable disasters.

According to the Controller General, the increasing frequency of fire incidents in major cities, such as the recent Afritower fire in Lagos and Abuja plaza fires, highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards in public and commercial buildings.

The task force, chaired by Assistant Controller General Bolarinde Tajudeen Muhammed, Head of the Inspection, Investigation, and Enforcement (I.I.E.) Department, comprises senior officers from various departments.

The task force has been mandated to
map public buildings nationwide and classify their respective fire risk levels; inspect facilities to determine their level of compliance with fire safety regulations, and provide comprehensive recommendations to guide enforcement actions and policy decisions.

The Controller General emphasized that “fire safety is not a choice but a shared responsibility” and urged owners and managers of public, private, and high-rise buildings to extend maximum cooperation to the task force during the audit exercise.

The FFS is committed to protecting lives, property, and critical national assets, and this initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
