New INEC Chairman urged to ensure credible electoral process

A senior lawyer of note, Amobi Nzelu Esq has congratulated Professor Joash Amupitan on his Senate confirmation as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and urged him to ensure a credible electoral process in Nigeria.

He addressed journalists over the weekend in his chamber in Abuja.

The lawyer noted that the country’s electoral process has been marred by faults, leading to the emergence of unqualified candidates in various offices.

He attributed this to compromised electoral processes and urged Amupitan to do the right thing and resist any pressure that may compromise his work.

Key issues highlighted, are faulty electoral processes that lead to the emergence of unqualified candidates, compromised electoral processes that undermine the credibility of the electoral system, and the need for electronic voting to ensure transparency and credibility in elections.

He advised to Amupitan to do the right thing and resist any pressure that may compromise his work, ensure that the electoral process is transparent and credible and, work towards strengthening the powers of INEC and amending the electoral laws to reflect the will of the people.

Nzelu therefore urged Nigerians to give Amupitan a chance to deliver and avoid putting pressure on him and allow INEC to conduct credible elections that reflect the will of the people.

The lawyer’s advice comes as a timely reminder of the importance of credible elections in Nigeria’s democracy. With Amupitan’s confirmation, Nigerians are hopeful that the electoral process will be improved, and credible leaders will emerge.
