…takes over disputed land
Benue state Government in a decisive move to end the persistent crisis between Mbakera community in Mbaivur, Gwer Local Government and Mbawa in Guma Local Government has taken over the disputed land for her immediate use.
Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals, Rev. Dr. Frederick Ikyaan announced this decision in his office on Tuesday, 20th January, 2026 during a meeting with management and traditional rulers of the two waring communities.
He noted that the Alia administration does not want to leave the traditional institution behind in her decision on such matters that is why they were called to once again remind them of the move to takeover the land.
Mr. Akaha Sule, the Media Assistant to the Honorable Commissioner, in a press release said, throwing light on the development, Surveyor General of the state, Surv. Emmanuel Nôngo said government had arrived at that decision long ago but the ministry was under a different leadership, so the present Commissioner wants to interact with them before taking further action.
In his response, Ter Gwer, HRH. Chief Dominic Akpe thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for heeding their cries by appointing one of their own as Commissioner for Lands, who is changing the narrative by carrying them along.
Chief Akpe expressed joy at the development as according to him, it will proffer solution to the crisis that had defied solution and wasted lives and properties of their subjects, adding that they are well aware that land belongs to the government and so they cannot oppose the move.
On his part, Ter Guma, HRH Chief Dennis Shemberga represented by Mueter Ihyarev, Chief Shonyi Augustine, said he cannot say anything different from what his counterpart had said, adding that government has the right by law over all lands and so they cannot oppose the move.
In a vote of thanks, District Head of Mbawa, Chief Joseph Ortese thanked the ministry for the intervention but urged the government to take action immediately to lay all issues to rest once and for all.
The meeting had the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mrs. Eunice Ihu and Directors of the ministry in attendance while traditional rulers of Guma led by Ter Guma, Dennis Shemberga (represented) and Ter Gwer, Chief Dominic Akpe respectively.
